Stepping Up - Leadership during disasters

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

“Leadership in recovery is different. It is chaotic, where black and white becomes many shades of grey. It will require more from you as a leader than any other role you’ve ever had. It’s a horrible opportunity.”

Leading in Disaster Recovery – A Companion Through The Chaos NZ Red Cross

Never a truer word spoken! So, how then can you prepare for leadership during a disaster? As with disaster preparedness for your home or business, growing your knowledge and physically preparing is key. By exploring and understanding the disaster response and recovery context, this workshop aims to provide some insights and tools, should you get “the horrible opportunity” to step up.

What will be covered:

• The disaster context – what are the physical and psychological impacts of a disaster for individuals and communities
• Disaster response and recovery arrangements – top down and bottom up
• Not the usual suspect? What makes a strong leader after a disaster - unpacking approaches, assumptions, ethics, empathy, people-centred decision-making, communications and self-care
• Strengths-based recovery – knowing yourself, and valuing your community’s assets
• Practice makes for better decisions (there is no perfect) - Scenario-based exercises to test considerations for decision making in a disaster context
• Tools and resources – links to support preparation, response and recovery.

Who should attend? This online workshop is FREE and is for members of Tablelands Regional Council’s Community Disaster Team members, and prospective members if places are available.
