STF Spark Series: Lighting Design 101 with Caitlyn Staples

Join lighting designer, Caitlyn Staples, in this introductory Spark Session on Lighting Design!
A lighting designer works in collaboration with the director and design team to create a lighting design for a project. Some of their tasks include:
- Creating a lighting design based on the needs of the director’s vision, and in collaboration with other designers
- Plotting and programming the design for technical operation in shows
- Working with technical manager to procure and install lights
In this 2-hour Spark Session, you’ll learn about lighting basics and terminology, what to consider when thinking about using light, and how light can be used as a narrative tool.
About Caitlyn
Caitlyn has a Bachelor of Production from VCA with a major in Lighting Design. During which she was also accepted to study at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London on exchange. She then worked as UK Lighting Designer Mark Jonathan’s assistant for a year.
Moving home to Melbourne, Caitlyn now enjoys lighting school productions and helping to teach others about the technical side of the theatre. Caitlyn is the resident Lighting Designer for Adamson Theatre Company (Wesley College) and also works with students at St Michaels Grammar and Genezzano FCJ College.
Caitlyn was the 2014 recipient of the Rory Dempster Internship for Lighting Designers, and received the Melbourne University Limelighter Award for outstanding contribution to the arts.
