Stitch and share: An embroidery gathering

This workshop will be located in the gallery that contains artworks which reference war, displacement, violence, and sexual trauma. Visitors please take care while engaging with the exhibition. 

Come together to share a space with exhibiting artist Lema Shamamba and learn through demonstration and kōrero how to share knowledge through embroidery. Rather than a how to workshop, participants are encouraged to gather and share at whatever stage of expertise in embroidery.  

Join us at the Homestead Galleries from 1-2.30pm with Lema Shamamba alongside her exhibition Kitinga bashenyi.  

Is how I started to draw and make an embroidery to express my thoughts and share messages with people who are willing to hear my voice. In my embroidery, each stretch I used showed the suffering of my people in my village.   

All pūtea will go towards the Centre Amani, which is a safe community space for youth and young children to foster potential based in Bweremana, Democratic Republic of Congo.  

Centre Amani is a community space where children and young people have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. It was established by Lema Shamamba’s father in Bweremana, near the city of Goma in the east of the DRC. Through programmes at Centre Amani, women of the village can learn skills that have been lost through the continual war and unrest in the DRC.
