Stock Smart: Livestock Essentials for Small Properties (West Coolup)
Event description
Whether you’re just starting out with livestock or looking to build confidence in your management skills, this hands-on workshop is the perfect place to begin.
Presented by Bruce Maynard, 4th generation farmer, agricultural innovator, and Bob Hawke Landcare Award recipient, we’ll cover the essentials of livestock care and give you the practical knowledge you need to make better decisions on your property. Topics include:
· Livestock nutrition & how the rumen works – understand what’s really going on inside your animals and how to keep them healthy and productive.
· Pasture & grazing management – explore how to match animal needs with pasture growth, avoid overgrazing, and get the most out of your land.
· Stock handling skills – learn low-stress, effective techniques to move and manage animals safely.
This day is about seeing the principles and learning about the production and landscape benefits that can be achieved with examples of real life situations.
You are going to get a chance to see and understand the range of benefits that you can have with your animals from small changes in your physical body language style. Along that journey we will be integrating dietary mixing strategies and behavioural modification tactics into our discussions.
Practice with Level 2 competencies (covering starting/stopping and directing movement) for confidence in different situations.
Yard design principles will finish off the practicals for the day.
We will be actively working with the animals, amongst and alongside them. This is part of the process of not only understanding the principles that apply to achieve Stress Free results but also how it actually ‘feels’.
If you are not comfortable with any of the physical activities, you will not be forced to join in- watching and learning is just fine also. We want you to be comfortable and Stress Free on the day as well!
Will this workshop benefit me?
This workshop is designed for small-scale and new farmers who want clear, practical guidance without the jargon. You’ll leave with a solid foundation in livestock management and the confidence to put these skills into practice.
