Event description

NuunaRon, an initiative of First Peoples Disability Network Australia,is a group for Aboriginal and Torres Strait artists and emerging artists living with disability. The NuunaRon Art Group provides a safe space for people to share stories of strength and resilience through yarning, painting and creating art.

Hosted by Dr Alanya Drummond UNSW Disability Champion in honour of International Day of People with Disability, this webinar is the official launch event for Stories of Strength: Paintings from the NuunaRon Art Group presented on UNSW Library's Online Exhibitions, available from 3 December 2020.

According to a recent survey by People with Disability Australia, people with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is due to existing attitudinal, environmental and institutional barriers, such as access to healthcare and disability support systems.

In this in-conversation style webinar, Rosemary Kayess, UNSW Academic, 2019 Human Rights Medal Winner, Director of Engagement Disability Innovation Institute, leading human rights advocate and Lawyer will speak with NuunaRon artists, including Paul Constable-Calcott, about the impact of COVID-19 on culture and community, and the importance of strength, resilience and storytelling through art.

The webinar will have live captions. An interactive chat room will also offer a platform to connect to others through shared experiences.

The webinar will be recorded and circulated to all registrants after the event. Please ensure you register to receive the recording.

NuunaRon Art Group in partnership with the UNSW Division of Equity Diversity and Inclusion and UNSW Library, proudly present Stories of Strength: Paintings from the NuunaRon Art Group from 3 December 2020 through December 2021 presented on UNSW Library's Online Exhibitions.
