Description

Telling Tales’ StoryScapes returns this fall with three new events! Join digital wizard and author, Marty Chan, as he hosts an engaging pre-recorded virtual workshop with illustrator Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley released to the public on Thursday, November 12, 2026 at 9:15 AM ET.

What to Expect:

You’ll meet a Canadian illustrator from Telling Tales’ 2026 Reading List, hear a reading from the picture book they illustrated, and learn about how they create art in their own unique style.

Each session will also feature a take home project! Based on a creative prompt inspired by the themes present in the featured book, participants will be invited to make their own unique creation using the same artistic style shared by the participating illustrator. Submit your artwork to Telling Tales’ Try My Style Project for a chance to win copies of the featured story! (Details on how to submit your art will go out to registrants following each workshop.)

These workshops are perfect for children in Grades 1 to 6.

Meet the Featured Illustrator:

Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley - Thursday, November 12, 2026

Mangeshig is the illustrator of many picture books, including being a contributing illustrator in the collection I Am Indigenous by Anne Tenning. With mindful affirmations and stunning artwork, I Am Indigenous is a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be Indigenous. Powerful statements honor the richness of Indigenous experiences, showing how strength can be found in identity, inclusivity and respect, while acknowledging the vast variety of languages, territories, appearances, family structures, cultures and traditions. Each illustration was created by a different Indigenous artist, showing unique, personal expressions that highlight the diversity of Indigeneity in North America and Telling Tales feels very lucky to feature Mangeshig in this fall StoryScapes illustrator series!

In this session Mangeshig will share how he created the illustration that became the cover art for I Am Indigenous as well as more on his artistic style.
