Sat, 20 Sep, 6pm - 11pm BST

Event description

Part games night, part screening, this film night plays with the rules of spectatorship.

The first half is dedicated to a storytelling workshop based on the surrealist game Exquisite Corpse. Think monsters, crayons, and unserious class sharing. The workshop will take place in a relaxed setting: music, dimmed lights, and re-arrangeable seating. The Finch bar & restaurant will be serving food until the screening and drinks throughout the night, participants will be welcome to take a break and grab a snack whenever needed.

Following, we will sit down to watch Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s Leviathan (2012) a documentary / essay film on commercial fishing that plays with genre and embodiment, pushing the boundaries of the perceptible. Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel are part of Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab, an experimental laboratory that promotes innovative combinations of aesthetics and ethnography. In their first collaboration, they delve into the same waters that inspired Melville’s Moby Dick to document the harsh encounters between nature and mechanized labor. Shot on a dozen light-weight cameras strapped to the ships, the film is in equal measure disorientating and immersive.

Participants will be sent a consent form to allow for the event to be recorded and, following the screening, they will be asked to answer a questionnaire based on their experience.

This screening is free but participants are encouraged to donate to the Al-Jawad educational camp in Gaza, currently providing material, psychological, and emotional support to children amidst the horrors of genocide and famine.
