Storytelling Night

Every story wants to be heard.

Join us for an evening of personal stories hosted in partnership with the Dutch Club of Western Australia.

This year's theme, My Roots, invites us to reflect on the places, people, traditions and memories that have shaped who we are. Where do you come from? What shaped you? How have family, culture, place, language or life experiences influenced who you are today?

Throughout the evening, community members will share short, personal stories inspired by the theme. Some stories may be heartfelt, others humorous or reflective, but all offer a chance to learn more about the people and experiences that connect our community.

Oral storytelling has been a cherished tradition in Dutch culture and folklore. Initially, the function of storytelling was to convey history and information, news, entertainment, social cohesion and art, but after the advent of books, television, internet, story telling fell by the wayside.

Thankfully, oral storytelling as a performance art has seen a revival over the last 25 years, moving past the old idea that storytelling is only meant for young children. One such group reviving the artform is the Dutch Club of Western Australia.

Whether you have Dutch heritage, another cultural background, or simply enjoy hearing people's stories, everyone is welcome.

You do not need any storytelling experience to participate. Whether you would like to share a story or simply sit back and listen, everyone is welcome.
