Strange Behaviour: Nathan Haines
Description
We’re super excited to welcome a true icon of music in Aotearoa to Whakatū Nelson this October, with squire for hire, Nathan Haines joining us for a live/DJ hybrid set at DevIlle.
Nathan needs little introduction, a heavyweight jazz musician with a continued love for soulful electronic music, he’s internationally recognised as a forward thinking collaborator who has worked with Phil Asher, A-Sides, Goldie, Marlena Shaw, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Ron Trent, NZSO and more. His distinctive soprano saxophone has brought countless records to life, and his adaptability places him in more settings than we could name here.
After finishing his musical studies in New York in the early 90s, the likes of tastemaker Gilles Peterson helped set him on his journey, with debut album Shift Left beginning a run of phenomenal records that have led to recent masterpiece, Notes. 11 solo albums later, he’s going through another period of creativity, with new album Nathan Haines presents The Soft Chaos set to drop, and his label Family Affair running hot.
Currently in the UK, performing with musclecars, Goldie and in solo settings, we’re lucky to have found some room in his busy schedule for one of his now infamous live/DJ hybrid sets - a gloriously danceable, engaging mix of cutting edge deep house, jazz funk and disco, layered with keys and sax for extra enjoyment.
Strange Behaviour is a party, micro label and radio show, and we’ve brought the likes of Frank Booker, Kenji Takimi, Eden Burns and Christoph el Truento to Nelson. We believe in good music, great people and creating a memorable vibe.
