STRINGS OF KOLKATA - HOUSE CONCERT

We invite you to an intimate acoustic evening of the wonder and beauty of Indian Classical Music...
Featuring two variations of Indian Slide Guitar - the Mohan Veena & the Chataurangui, with tabla accompaniment.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

A confluence of 41 strings ringing in harmony the essence of Indian Raga Music - the sweet meditative beginning of the alap slowly exposing the distinctive elements of the Raga (so much more than a musical scale), followed by musical conversations with intricate tala (rhythms) from the tabla and an exciting jugalbandi (duet) between guitar players! 

THE PLAYERS:

We're happy to welcome Sri Rhitom Sarkar from Kolkata supported by Sri Shivam Rath & Sri Rodney Wright, our local duo who were captured by Indian Classical Music many years ago.

Rhitom began his extensive training in Indian Slide guitar with the renowned Kolkata Indian Slide luminary Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya at the age of 9, and has trained with Mr Debotosh Dey, Pandit Shyamal Chatterjee (a sitar player and disciple of the late Ustad Dabit Khan Sahib & Pandit Ravi Shankar). He received tabla taleem from Subhankar Banerjee & Pandit Samar Saha, and taleem incorporating Indian Classical with Spanish guitar under the guidance of music composer/director Sri Madhu Mukherjee.Rhitom enjoys bringing relatively uncommon ragas to audiences, blending Spanish guitar with Indian Classical and also makes Meditation music to assist enlightenment through the chakra system of the body.As a young player, he has amassed a variety of awards and honours, including from the Indian Government Ministery, recorded a number of albums, taught and mentored guitar, and has played around the world in a variety of ensembles in Indian Classical and fusion music.

Shivam is a second generation Aussie Indian Musician, following his fathers footsteps in both the world of Yoga and Indian classical music and since seriously taking up the path is sliding up to be Australia’s leading Slide Guitarist. Born into a musical family he has been combining his knowledge and path of meditation into the classically trained field of Music, Mantra and Raga. He is also writing and producing his own musical compositions, with many tracks bridging, reviving and blending the ancient arts, mantra and music into our modern world.Shivam has studied music directly from some of the worlds top leading instrumentalists including Riley Lee (Shakuhachi) Japanese flute & Indian Slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya as well as Tabla from Chota Lal Mishra (former BHU University Professor). He is particular passionate about sharing his experience and knowledge of music and has taught and hosted workshops, retreats in numerous countries and locations around the world as well as multiple tours with some of India's incredibly acclaimed maestros, earning a respect and recognition for establishing himself in this rich and ancient musical tradition.

Rodney landed in India as a young man, and started learning Tabla in 1992. In 1995 he was initiated into the Benares Gharana (Tradition) under his Guruji, the late Pandit Kedarnath Bhowmick. To this day Rodney maintains his tradition and enjoys collaborating and performing with artists of various backgrounds.
