Event description

Structuring a Story - There's more than a Beginning, Middle and End

To celebrate the end of Book Week we are having an afternoon of fun, creativity and inspiration for children to come along and learn how to write their own stories with local, award-winning author, Sandra Bennett.

Sandra will take the kids on a journey of discovery, from finding great ideas, to brainstorming fun and exciting scenarios and developing quirky characters.

This workshop is suitable for ages 8-15 and all participants will receive a journal for continuing their story writing at home.

About Sandra

Sandra Bennett is the award-winning author of the thrilling middle-grade Adamson Adventure Series. Fossil Frenzy, book 3, was awarded Finalist in the Children’s Fiction Category of the International Book Awards 2021. It was also a winner in the Queensland Writers Centre Adaptable Competition 2020, and as a result was pitched to film producers. Book One, Secrets Hidden Below, was Shortlisted in the Speech Pathology Book of the Year Awards 2019.

In previous years Sandra has independently published two picture books and two early readers. She has had seven short stories published in five anthologies, with another short story being published in another anthology on 1 September this year.

Her story, Cyclone Kayla, was written to become a graphic novel for the non-for-profit organisation, Library For All in 2020.

As a former Primary School teacher, Sandra enjoys author school visits for talks, readings and writing workshops. Sandra has presented at CBCA Canberra branch and the Canberra Writer’s Festival 2019.

Understanding the importance of hooking readers to help them develop a love of reading from an early age, is paramount to Sandra’s passion for writing. She enjoys creating relatable and humorous characters in everyday situations, then turning them into the extraordinary by giving each story a mischievous twist.

In her spare time Sandra is often seen walking her dog, roaming the hills around her country property just outside of Canberra. She enjoys creating stories that are inspired by the nature she finds around her. Sandra’s greatest and most lovable distraction is her growing family as more grandchildren arrive in her world.
