Event description

Student journalism has been a radical, irreverent and powerful voice for students in Australia for decades. Join a panel of three former editors of student publications from different decades as they discuss what's changed, what's stayed the same, and what's it all for with current Honi Soit editor Zeina Khochaiche. Panelists are ex-Tharunka editor Wendy Bacon, ex-Honi Soit editor Pat Lane and ex-Woroni editor Cam Wilson.

About Wendy Bacon

Wendy Bacon's editorship of Tharunka in 1970 and her anti-censorship activities led to her being briefly imprisoned on two occasions. She was involved in many alternative and independent publications in the 1970s before joining the mainstream media. She worked for SBS, Nine Media and a weekly investigative  newspaper called the National Times. She won a Walkley award for her work on NSW corruption and later was the Professor and Head of Journalism and Director of the Centre for Independent Journalism at UTS. These days she continues to practise as an independent journalist while also being part of activist campaigns.

About Pat Lane

Patricia is a barrister and senior lecturer in law at Sydney Law School. She edited Honi with Peter Goodall in 1978. After Honi, Pat completed a BA LLB and later an LLM at Sydney. She has had several other jobs, including as first Registrar and then Member of the National Native Title Tribunal, and adviser 2005-2010 on land issues at the Sudanese peace negotiations concerning Darfur and South Sudan.

About Cam Wilson

Cam Wilson is Crikey's associate editor. He previously worked as a reporter at the ABC, BuzzFeed, Business Insider and Gizmodo. He primarily covers internet culture and tech in Australia.
