Studio Sessions - Oil Painting A Tonalist Approach
Event description
Painting in the Tonalist Tradition: A Two-Day Workshop
Discover how to create luminous, atmospheric landscapes in this immersive two-day workshop. Working with both transparent and opaque colours, you’ll learn to harness the subtle power of tone, mood, and light — the hallmarks of the Tonalist tradition.
With a maximum of just four students, you’ll enjoy individual guidance and plenty of feedback as we explore:
The tonal foundations that give paintings strength and mood
The role of transparent colours in creating depth, glow, and atmosphere
Techniques for glazing, scumbling, and soft transitions
Building a restrained palette for harmony and subtle expression
This workshop is information-rich and process-driven. Rather than simply following along, you’ll gain the skills to create with confidence long after the class ends. While you may not complete a finished painting in the two days, you’ll leave with a strong work-in-progress and the knowledge to refine it further at home.
Whether you prefer a looser, expressive approach or love diving into fine detail, the methods I teach adapt beautifully to your style.
And the learning doesn’t stop there — I offer free ongoing support to all students after the workshop, so you’ll always have guidance when you need it.
This class is ideal for painters with some experience of oils, who want to explore the expressive possibilities of transparency and tone in a supportive, focused setting.
