Event description

Join us at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre to enjoy Erna Walraven discuss her new book, Hear Me Roar.

Erna is a local of the Bellingen Shire as was Senior Curator at Taronga Zoo for twenty years where she was responsible for the scientific management of 400 species, including genetics, taxonomy, behaviour, welfare, interpretation and research.

Stuff animals taught me

In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a ‘man’s job’. So, she looked to the animals under her care for scientific evidence and evolutionary history to debunk the myths about females, animal and human, that once held her back.

Erna blends memoir and pop science to tell a fiercely female story, her latest book is called Hear Me Roar.
