What Is Sunday Story Time?
Sunday Story Time is The Mill Theatre’s annual storytelling event – a welcoming space for writers of all levels and anyone with a story to tell. Whether you’ve been quietly refining a piece for years or have never written a ‘story’ before, we invite you to put pen to paper and submit your work.
Stories can be anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes long. The Mill Theatre team reviews all submissions and curates a program of selected stories to be read aloud for an audience. It’s the perfect opportunity to take a first draft out of the drawer and into the world!
First established in 2023, Sunday Story Time was held at the end of each year until 2026, when the UPSTAGING Festival incorporated the event into its annual program in March.
Following strong interest in 2026, submissions are now open for 2027, with The Mill allowing plenty of time for writers to develop their stories before performances later in the year.
Step One: Preparing Your Story
You can submit any form of writing - memoir, short fiction, personal reflection, creative non-fiction, or even the first chapter of a longer work. The only requirement: the piece must be read aloud by one person. Works with multiple characters or complex dialogue may not suit this format.
A 1–20 minute piece usually equals 2–15 pages.
Step Two: Submitting Your Work
How to Submit Your Story
Pay the $30 submission fee to secure your place.
Email your story to hello@milltheatreatdairyroad.com along with confirmation of your payment.
All selected stories will be performed by professional actors from the Mill Theatre.
Step Three: Selection & Program Building
Once submissions close, The Mill Theatre team reads all entries. If your work is selected, you’ll receive confirmation, complimentary tickets and details about which performance your work will be performed.
Step Four: Performance Days
The Mill wants to give writers plenty of time to develop their stories and prepare their submissions. Performance dates will be scheduled for later in 2027 and announced soon, before the submission deadline.
