SUDS Presents “Rent: The Musical (No, Not That Rent)”

    By Bella Wellstead

    4-7 December 2024

PACT Centre for Emerging Artists, Erskineville

Runtime: 2 hours with a 15 minute interval

    —----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUDS acknowledges that the University of Sydney and PACT Centre for Emerging Artists are on stolen land; the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. Stories were told on this land for thousands of years prior to British colonisation, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to create and tell stories here.

Sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land.

The sun rises on a Petersham pub. Hazel zips around the bar in a blur of vaporised nicotine. Isaac rests his pounding head on a sticky table. Rowan is late. Rowan’s always late. It’s giving Hazel the shits, big time. She has something important to ask them both.

A rooster crows outside a bedroom window in Mumbil - a tiny town 68km north of Orange. Callum lounges at the foot of his best mate’s bed. Joey paces, swinging around a half-packed bag. He sighs. He has something important to tell him.

The midday sun blisters over an apartment inspection in the Inner West. Seventy people stand outside, fanning themselves, glancing up and down the line of punters. They’ve all just come to the same realisation. They’re fucked.

“Rent: The Musical (No, Not That Rent)” is an original musical inspired by the pop-country hits of the nineties and naughties. A story of love, loss, and expensive bloody schooners, “Rent” lays bare the sorry state of searching for a rental in Sydney’s Inner West.
