Practice Knowledge for Working with LGBTQA+ Clients
Event description
Please join us for this training on Practice Knowledge for Working with LGBTQA+ Clients on Wednesday, 11 June at 5-7 pm (AEST) via zoom.
Training will be delivered by Karen Beashel (she/her) the Principal Solicitor from Inner City Legal Centre alongside Araz Ahmed (he/they), a social worker, and project and change manager, recently working in Legal Aid.
Learning objectives:
Increase practical knowledge of how a client’s sexuality and/or gender diversity (if shared) can significantly impact their experience of legal services — to ensure affirming, non-discriminatory, and person-centred support from the very first point of contact, even before they speak with a lawyer.
Identify gaps and issues in awareness and practice knowledge across key matter groups and areas of law, regarding how a client’s sexuality and/or gender diversity can impact their right to legal assistance with self-determination and dignity.
Gain insights, tools and strategies for providing affirming, psychologically safe legal assistance to sexuality and/or gender diverse clients.
Increased confidence in delivering person-centred, affirming communication with sexuality and/or gender diverse clients, as well as providing legal assistance that considers impacts their sexuality and/or gender diversity may have on their legal outcomes.
This training is being run in partnership with LGBTIQ+ Health Australia’s MindOut program, as part of the National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program Grants from the National Department of Health and Aged Care.
