This training is NOT suitable for anyone currently suffering depression, anxiety, recent lived experience of suicide or suicidal ideation. Suicide Prevention Training (Wesley program facilitated & funded by Mentoring Men)

Informed by the latest research in suicide prevention, Wesley LifeForce has developed a quality suite of suicide prevention training. Our suicide prevention training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to increase awareness of suicide in Australia, identify the signs that someone may be at risk of suicide and appropriate action to take. Effective interventions can make a real difference and save lives. Our programs aim at training individuals from all walks of life, as well as organisational groups. All Wesley LifeForce facilitators are accredited trainers and have completed suicide intervention training. Below you will find an outline of our workshops.

The outcomes

Session one: Raising awareness of suicide in Australia

  • awareness of the requirements for classification of a death as suicide
  • understand that suicidal ideation and planning are not linear processes
  • knowledge of the occurrence and demographics of suicide in Australia
  • list common barriers to helping a suicidal person including your own beliefs and attitudes
  • be able to identify risk and protective factors
  • differentiate between risk factors and warning signs
  • recognise the association between loss and suicidality
  • understand the cascade of events that can lead to thought of suicide
  • capability to be able to implement the SALT suicide intervention strategy
  • identify national and local suicide prevention resources
  • understand the importance of self-care and be able to implement self-care strategies

Ensuring participant safety

Our workshop material is specifically designed keeping participant’s safety in mind. The course material is vetted by MindFrame – an Australian Government body which provides expert advice to the suicide prevention sector on responsible reporting/portrayal of the issue of suicide.
