Summer 2026 Comic Creator Poutama

Get your comic on in this virtual comic creator sequential event. Named after the Māori poutama design which symbolizes growling levels of learning and achievement, this event is designed to give creators a chance to experience the comic creation process from start to finish. 

Creators will be sent a prompt via the email with which they registered at 10am on November first. You will have a week in which to create your 4-8 page script and turn it in via email for feedback, which will be returned within 24-48 hours maximum.

Start Date: November 1st

Timeline: 

• November 1st: topic(s) for sent to registered participants

• November 2-7th: write the first draft of your 8 page script and submit it

• November 7-8th: receive feedback on your script's first draft

• November 8-14th: second draft of script

• November 14-15th: receive final script feedback

• November 15th-21st: complete all line art for your script

• November 21st-22nd: feedback given to participants on line art

• November 22nd-30th: complete final pages incorporating feedback

• November 31-December 1st: final feedback given

Creators may work alone or as a team(s) and may choose any genre or style they desire as long as the theme or topic given is present and core to the work. Creators may choose color or black and white for their finished pages but must specify which they will be delivering when they turn in their script. 

Creators must turn in submissions on time to remain part of the event. No AI may be used in any part of the process. Creators retain all rights to their works and Indie Comic Creators of Aotearoa reserves the right to promote them and their work as part of participation in the Comic Creator Poutama.
