BULAAN BURUUGAA NGALI EXHIBITION

Bundjalung and beyond are lands steeped in complex woven histories and identities. Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali Exhibition shares the histories and identities of women who bring forth ancient weaving practices and knowledge systems.

Held over three regional galleries located on Bundjalung Country in the Northern Rivers region of NSW (Grafton, Lismore, Murwillumbah), this ground-breaking exhibition presents new work by contemporary First Nations artists responding to their great grandmother’s artistry of weaving alongside historic ancestral woven objects from the Australian Museum collection.

Weavers include: Bindimu, Casino Wake Up Time, Janelle Duncan, Madeleine Grace, Lauren Jarrett, Tania Marlowe, Bianca Monaghan, Krystal Randall, Rhoda Roberts AO, Kyra Togo and Margaret Torrens.

This touring exhibition is presented by Arts Northern Rivers in partnership with the Grafton Regional Gallery, Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, and Lismore Regional Gallery. This project was made possible by the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support Program, the NSW Government through Create NSW, the Dobell Exhibition Grant Program, funded by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation and managed by Museums & Galleries of NSW, and the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund.

DENNIS GOLDING | POWER - The Future is Here

POWER - The Future is Here is the result of a collaboration between artist Dennis Golding and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Alexandria Park Community School. The superhero capes were created during a workshop in 2020, led by Golding who was an artist in residence at the school through Solid Ground. Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 designed their capes with iconography informed by their lived experiences and cultural identity.

As superheroes, Golding and his young collaborators are empowered and reminded of the strength of their culture in forming their identity and connection to Country. Individually and together, the capes critique social, political and cultural representations of contemporary First Nations experience.

A Solid Ground project with Dennis Golding and Alexandria Park Community School, curated by Kyra Kum-Sing, presented by Carriageworks and Blacktown Arts, and touring with Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.

SUPERPOWER | Community Capes

SUPERPOWER | Community Capes is an exhibition of capes made by youth at the Acmena Youth Justice Centre in Grafton. Students participated school holiday workshops led by Clarence Valley based creative educators, and decorated Dennis Golding inspired capes with motifs that explore identity and connection to culture. This unique community project aimed to provide meaningful outreach to some of the state’s most disadvantaged youth and create pathways for connection and pride.

This outreach project was developed by Grafton Regional Gallery as a public program supporting DENNIS GOLDING | Power - The Future is Here.
