Tree bark is one of nature's most extraordinary surfaces; scarred, layered, built up over time into something both rugged and beautiful. In this two-day workshop, that richness becomes the starting point for deeply textural textile art, working with an unusual combination of materials: velvet, painted papers, metal fabrics, fine reclaimed metals, industrial metal cloth, wire, and beads. Through hand stitching, wrapping, beading, slashing and surface manipulation, you'll learn to build surfaces with depth and complexity, the kind that rewards close looking. Soft meets hard, organic meets industrial, and the results are as individual as the maker. The work you create could become a framed panel, a book cover, a jewellery piece, or a fashion element, the choice is yours. Suitable for all levels; just bring a curiosity about materials and a willingness to experiment.

      Alysn Midgelow-Marsden -- BOOKS WITH BACKBONE -- Piano hinge -- 2 Days: Mon 11-Tue 12 Jan -- Member-only price ticket

The piano hinge binding is one of bookmaking's most satisfying formats. It is tactile, flexible, and beautifully sculptural. Named for its resemblance to the long interlocking hinge of a piano lid, the spine is created by weaving kebab sticks through folded paper tabs, producing a structure that moves and opens quite differently from a conventional book. The pleasing secret is that it involves almost no measuring; just folding, weaving, and a little patience. In this workshop you'll learn the core principles of the binding, explore how to open up further creative possibilities. Make your own richly textured covers from papers treated with wax to create an antiqued, painterly finish or bring your own embroideries to add to the cover. The result could be a sketchbook, journal, or keepsake that looks far more intricate than it actually is to make. No bookbinding experience necessary.

My parents live in the small, seaside town of Denmark on the south coast of WA. It looks nothing like these designs (!!!), but these pieces, created by my Mum, are very reminiscent of harbourside scenes in Copenhagen. So, we give you “Denmark Dreaming” – two cityscapes where each building is filled with different canvaswork filling stitches. These designs are great for extending your creative confidence. You will receive charts and instructions for both layouts; learn about creating texture with small stitches and compensating at the edge of shapes; and have lots of fun playing with colour. This project is a great stash buster, so I invite you to dive into your collection of threads left over from previous projects and use them to build up a unique colour scheme.

Recreate a beautiful endangered Australian parrot or two in embroidered soft sculpture. This fun and relaxed workshop pays homage to the work of British embroiderer Winsome Douglass, whose book Toys for Your Delight was published in 1957, the year the Guild was founded. You may choose to make a Princess, Orange Bellied, Swift or Golden Shouldered Parrot in the workshop but you are sure to want to make some of the other parrots afterwards. Prior to the workshop, choose which of the four parrots you would like to make - there are plenty of images on the web. Pattern pieces are cut from wool felt with colours selected to match the parrot plumage, and embroidered using simple stitches. Embroidered pieces are then joined and stuffed to create your parrot sculpture.

In this workshop we will take a large sheet of paper, paint freely across it, and then transform that painting into a one sheet book. Add colour, collage, texture and marks across the entire surface — without worrying about individual pages. Then cut & fold your painting to discover an art book hidden within it. I will show you four different one sheet book structures. Then we will make fabric collage covers for your books using fabric and adding stitch and tactile details. You choose your favourite colours. If you want to bring your own photos for inspiration, please do. For instance you might like to work with the theme of flowers. Suitable for all levels and the only requirements are enthusiasm and a willingness to explore and enjoy.

      Alysn Midgelow-Marsden -- BOOKS WITH BACKBONE -- Piano hinge -- 2 Days: Mon 11-Tue 12 Jan -- Non-member price ticket

“Celestial Twist” is all about working with layers of stitches to create a feeling of movement in the design. Inspired by string art motifs, you will work traditional stitches like rice stitch; a variety of overlaid crescent variations; and two different lattice designs. My version is worked in stranded silks on 24-count Congress Cloth, but it will work just as well if you choose to work it in stranded cottons from your stash. You can also choose to work on 18-count canvas if you prefer. On 24-count Congress, the finished design measures approximately 23cm x 19cm. On 18-count canvas, the design measures approximately 30cm x 25cm.
