Summer School 2027: Waterless Lithography Made Easier

Join artist Steve Lovett to learn the accessible and effective process of waterless lithographic printing in this 4-day Summer School workshop.

Steve has refined and simplified this process in his role as Senior Research Technician at Elam School of Fine Arts to bring you a fail-safe, reliable process that can be replicated at home. The waterless lithographic printing process uses silicone-coated aluminium plates and special oil-based inks to print images without water.

Lithography offers printmakers the unique ability to translate a drawn image onto a printing plate. Images will be drawn in a variety of media suitable to the process, allowing you to bring your own choices and creative flair to your work.

Once the plates are prepared you will be able to print your images using a large format printing press. Aluminium plates are endlessly recyclable and available to purchase by students on completion of the course.

Steve Lovett has a multi-decade practice emerging from printerly research. Steve teaches print technologies at Te Waka Tūhura Elam Fine Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Lovett’s studio is centred on collecting and reworking images and texts to develop counter-narratives that critique power. These have taken the form of sound archives, text-based work, photo documentation, collage and most recently, performance. Lovett’s pedagogical research concerns the acquisition of various forms of literacy by ‘first in family’ students transitioning to tertiary study, developing structured approaches to knowledge and skill acquisition relevant to both theoretical learning and practical application.

In the unfortunate event your workshop does not meet minimum enrolment numbers you will be contacted on or before Wednesday 16 December. You may have the option to transfer to another workshop or a full refund will be given (Payment Plan extra fee excluded).
