Event description

Join Nature Conservation Margaret River Region for our Environmental Sundowner on the topic of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY.

We'll delve into what it means to live in a global biodiversity hotspot, and the double edged sword of this term.

We'll hear from Professor Hans Lambers, a renowned plant biologist plant biologist, author of more than 600 papers and the book Plant Life on the Sandplains in South West Australia. UWA's Professor Lambers has studied the evolutionary survival techniques of thousands of native WA species; has an international reputation for his work on plant respiration, nutrition, growth, productivity and plant-soil interactions; and he established the Kwongan Foundation to improve conservation strategies for endangered plants. He’ll discuss the double-edged sword of why our region is so incredibly biodiverse but why it is also vulnerable to invaders.

Second speaker is Simon Cherriman. All those of you who were lucky enough to be at Simon's book launch last year will know what a wonderfully engaging and passionate speaker Simon is. At this sundowner, Simon will be speaking about forest structures and habitat. Of course - hollows - but also, the lesser known habitats... and the dependence and interconnectedness of our South-West WA species. (Simon will also be delivering a workshop so STAY TUNED for more info on that)

Meanwhile, Nature Conservation’s Arum Lily Blitz Project Officer Obelia Walker will discuss why arum lilies – although considered a beautiful flowering plant by some – are an “ugly” species for our ecosystem, the impacts of this invasive species, and some of the control successes the Arum Lily Blitz (and their tireless team) have contributed to our Cape to Cape region.

We couldn't imagine discussing biodiversity and key efforts happening within our landscape without inviting bush regenerator Rick Ensley up for a word. We're feeling very chuffed to have (finally) secured Rick Ensley to join us on the Q and A panel.

Enjoy light supper, a drink, audience Q and A and become part of the conversation. We look forward to seeing you there.
