Event description

Super Rats play fun and fascinating traditional music from the backstreets of Bucharest. The heart of the band is a rare and wonderful instrument: the cimbalom. Imagine it as honkytonk piano meets xylophone on the shores of the Black Sea. Add pumping accordion, soaring violin, punchy double bass, and the result is an authentic feast for curious ears. Expect bouncy, crooked tunes that dare you to dance!

The band was formed in 2017 to explore Romanian traditional music featuring the cimbalom, a many-stringed dulcimer that bandleader Tim Meyen has been obsessed with for 30 years. Tim taught himself to speak Romanian and has travelled there eight times to study with masters of the instrument. Super Rats have performed at many major festivals and events including WOMADelaide, the National Folk Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival, Sydney Folk Festival, Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival. Another first, not-to-be-missed event, brought to you by Braidwood Concert Series.
