Event description

Ka kitea a Matariki, kua maoka te hinu / When Matariki is seen, the game is preserved

This year we celebrate Māori New Year when our pātaka (storage house) is full of kai. Gathered and preserved to ensure an abundant supply for our special feast, to be held as Matariki and her daughters rise in the phase of the moon known as Tangaroa, the moon of plenty.

Our festive dinner, held over two nights on 6th and 7th July, will focus on food connected to four of the sisters stars - Tupuānuku (earth), Tupuārangi (forest), Waitī (fresh water) and Waitā (ocean), and using four techniques of preserving - salt, pickling, smoke and fat.

With salmon from the waters surrounding Aoraki, venison hunted from nearby Aorangi range, and fish off the Kāpiti coast, these are just some of the bountiful foods we will share with you, your whānau and friends.

Joining us for the dinner are guests Johanna Knox (author of A Forager's Treasury) and Jannine Rickards (The Huntress wines).

Johanna Knox (Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Ranginui, Tangata Tiriti)
