Supporting children & young people who have had negative experiences online

Key Learnings:

• Understand how negative online experiences can activate a threat response and the impact of prolonged stress.

• Use the sequence of engagement to re-connect and support without judgement.

• Explore how to structure difficult conversations without shutting down communication.

• Support children to recognise early signs of harmful or unsafe online content.

• Develop a collaborative approach to predicting and planning around potential future online harm.

This event is for anyone who works with children and young people who have access to the internet.

The digital world offers children and young people many opportunities to connect, learn and explore, but it can also expose them to experiences that cause significant stress and distress.

This training supports adults to build safe, trusting relationships and create the conditions for open, non-judgemental conversations about difficult online experiences. Using an attachment-led, trauma-informed and collaborative framework, participants will explore how online experiences can activate a child’s threat response and how adults can respond with validation, connection and co-regulation.

The training will also explore how to help children recognise early signs of harmful content, develop approaches to predict and plan for risk, and build the confidence and skills needed to navigate the digital world more safely.

Local authorities in membership with Children in Scotland

Please note that all local authority staff working from both headquarter and regional offices including senior management are included in membership and can register as members for discounted training with Children in Scotland. Membership does not extend to schools and nurseries within individual local authorities.
