Supporting Sensory Needs & Self-regulation
Description
This session forms part of this year's Neurominded Early Learning Webinar Series

Session overview
Discover how children’s sensory systems influence their experience of the world. Learn to identify needs across all sensory systems, support regulation, and create sensory-inclusive environments. This engaging session combines science and practice, helping educators promote calm, connection and readiness for learning.
Sensory processing plays a critical role in how children participate in daily routines, play, social interactions and learning. When sensory needs are misunderstood or unmet, children may experience stress and dysregulation, leading to shifts in emotion, energy, attention or behaviour.
This session explores how inherent differences in sensory processing influence people’s experiences, and why it is vital to recognise and support both children’s and adults’ regulation when building inclusive learning spaces.
Participants will deepen their understanding of sensory processing and self‑regulation, and leave with practical, compassionate strategies that are realistic, respectful and neuro‑affirming.
What we’ll explore in this session
During this 2‑hour webinar, we will explore:
The eight sensory systems, and how sensory processing looks different for everyone.
The connection between sensory input, nervous system regulation, and behaviour.
Common signs that sensory needs may be impacting a child’s access to routines and learning experiences.
Practical strategies to support sensory needs and whole‑group regulation as part of daily routines.
Thoughtful, individualised adjustments to support children with unique sensory processing differences.
Using co‑regulation to support the gradual development of children’s self‑regulation skills.
Foundational neuroscience is introduced in an accessible way to help make sense of big emotions, stress responses and dysregulation, with a strong emphasis on real‑world application in early learning settings.
