Event description

Get ready! We've got a good one coming up here...
Following up from their legendary b2b at Cuba Dupa this year, we're delighted and excited to welcome SURLY and GOLDTOOTH back to the capital for a 3-hour back to back set covering a broad range of genres and sounds, from house and techno through to grime and footwork, and we're not sure what else in between.
We've been chomping at the bit to host both of these artists for a while, so it's a serious pleasure to have them together, curating a box office length set on one of our favourite soundsystems in the country.
Joining them on support we have two of the best DJs in the capital - BABETECH, RadioActive host and purveyor of powerful and meditative bass sounds, as well as CURRENT BIAS, sonic innovator and musical experimenter with a track record for cutting edge sonics.
We've also got deep sounds courtesy of TUB'S AUDIO, utilizing applied physics, state-of-the-art design tools, and meticulous craftsmanship to deliver an unparalleled sonic experience.

A bit of background for those unaware...

SURLY is a pioneering electronic music producer and DJ from Auckland, New Zealand, renowned for blending Chicago footwork with jazz, UK bass, and hip-hop influences. His jazz-rooted innovative approach has garnered international recognition, in particular his ability to infuse dance music with unique sonic textures. In 2017 he released 'Trip To Warsaw', merging cinematic elements with dancefloor-ready beats through a lens of Polish culture. Since then he has made a number of releases on the esteemed Chicago label JUKE BOUNCE WORK, establishing his unique take on the footwork genre.

Joining him is GOLDTOOTH, a British-Tamil DJ, producer, and radio presenter originally from South London, recently relocated to New Zealand. His work is deeply influenced by the Asian underground movement of the 1990s, with his sets often featuring a fusion of UK garage, grime, dubstep, and African electronic music, reflecting his diverse musical inspirations. Beyond his musical endeavors, GoldTooth is also a practicing dentist and clinical supervisor for undergraduate dentistry students. He integrates his passion for music into his dental practice, curating playlists for his surgery and assisting brands with music selection for campaigns and venues. We've been trying to find the right slot for this legend ever since he moved here, and this seems absolutely perfect to us.

Opening things up we have CURRENT BIAS, a sound designer, DJ, and electronic music producer originally from Boorloo, now based in Pōneke. They have become a distinctive voice in Aotearoa’s experimental club scene, known for blending granular textures with emotionally resonant, bass-driven rhythms. In 2023, they released the EP Frontal on the Auckland-based label Related Articles, exemplifying their signature style of complex sound design paired with driving beats. Their sets are chaotic yet beautiful, and we can't wait for them to set the tone for the sound of this evening.

Finally on closing duties we have the wonderful BABETECH, a mercurial talent with a penchant for hypnotic bass music that carries a deep soul to it. Through her Rāmere Drive Show on Active, she has been responsible for spreading good music across the Wellington airwaves for years now, and has climbed her way to the top of the capital's DJ pile as a result of her elite selections and fantastic mixing skills. She will be closing things out with an hour of top notch Footmahi, and we're excited as always.

We would be remiss if we didn't mention our soundsystem for the evening, the mighty TUB'S AUDIO. After an extended residency in the Cobb Valley at festivals such as Twisted Frequency and Rolling Hertz, the Tub's Audio soundsystem is back in Wellington once again to emit some seriously deep and rumbling bass once more. Last year we brought this beast of a machine into Moon Bar for Paige Julia's 1985 EP Release, and we believe that this is an equally fitting occasion for a deep bass workout.
