Survivalism to Thrivalism - Ōrākei

Dane Tumahai is a 7th-generation Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, a direct descendant of the Maori Chief, Apihai Te Kawau who gifted land to establish Auckland City. He have my own Tourism company that delivers authentic cultural experiences of our past, present and future.

As a Cultural Edutainer, this is based on historical fact, stories handed down by my tūpuna and accessing cultural sites of significance in Tāmaki Makaurau that underpin our stories from "Survivalism to Thrivalism"

ITINERARY

• 9:45am start – Meet and park at Okahu Bay at 9:45am on the beach side opposite the urupā (cemetery) on Tamaki Drive. Meeting point on google maps.

• Location 1 – Okahu Bay: Our forced relocation of our Original papakainga, significance of Okahu Bay, our links to Te Arawa and Tainui, Home fires burning – mana lost.

• Location 2 – Kitemoana Street & Takaparawhau: "Our living village" - housing past, present and future

Hīkoi (walk across the whenua)

1. Orakei Marae "on the boundary", tikanga and kawa (cultural protocols) history of its establishment, its role and purpose, significant events

2. Bastion Point occupation/Treaty of Waitangi – mana regained - "Co governance does work when you have 2 parties that have a shared kaupapa"

3. Ngati Whatua Orakei – present leadership and vision for the future

• Location 3 – Pourewa: Establishment of the Native nursery and Maara kai - "Ōrākei Visual Framework" History and significance of this land and how our matauranga (knowledge) informs our cultural practice, including kai as a covid response and how we partner with the community.
