About the Artist

Doors open 30' before start time

Susannah Sail is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, making soul, jazz and alternative-indie music with her three best friends and bandmates, Morgan Doughty (guitar), George Offenbach (bass), and Taylor Daley (drums).

Susannah’s songwriting is inspired by her past relationships, musings on the complexity of human emotion, and a positive vision of the future. Initially engaging with the “simpler” lyricism of Nick Drake, Eva Cassidy and Bill Withers instilled in her a certain efficiency of words; prose easily digested but which unfurls in your mind and rewards multiple listens with new found meaning and emotion. Her vocal style and melodies were influenced by a similar cast of 60’s and 70’s classics, while also absorbing a lot of the older jazz vocalists - Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan et al. - and the dizzying ubiquity of 90’s and 00’s R&B leading her to a highly melody focussed approach, and a penchant for interesting intervallic and improvisational flourish.

Her rhythm section’s proclivities lie in improvisation, testing the waters of their own technical capacity, and a love for harmony, unusual beats and expansive chord progressions. Having cut their teeth and enmeshed themselves playing jazz, soul, pop, and psych music together in multiple settings, performing entirely improvised gigs with a broad range of featured guests, running jam nights together and writing original music, these three have taken Susannah’s timeless, colourful tunes and enriched them with the magic of a live jazz band. Together, they accentuate and compliment the stunning moments Susannah writes a la minute at the live shows, but also by meticulous design in the arranging and recording process, all in the service of these heartfelt songs.

For fans of freaky British folk from the 60’s, crazy German sonic experiments of the 70’s, stadium power ballads of the 80’s, nerdy guitar driven indie from the 90’s, emotional, genre-defying cuts from the 00’s and 2010’s, and the futuristic sounds of nu-jazz and neo-soul from the last decade or so, Susannah Sail makes music that is difficult to quantify, but which from the first spin to the 30th, takes you away to a place outside of your body, into the mind and soul of the collective consciousness, to a place of introspection, acceptance, gratitude, and optimism.
