Event description

As a national sustainable and healthy food systems network, Sustain members have an amazing wealth of experience and expertise. Combined with passion and motivation for food systems change, and a shared vision of a flourishing food future for all Australians, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues, hear about new projects, and share your work and ideas.

This event is for financial members of Sustain: The Australian Food Network - you can become a member here: https://sustain.org.au/members...

The event will feature a panel of Sustain members who will speak about their current work and future projects. Our confirmed speakers Liza Barbour, and Berbel Franse, and Savannah Supski.

The event will also feature updates from Sustain about new and ongoing project work and initiatives such as the Oakhill Food Justice Farm and food systems capacity building with the City of Wyndham.

Liza Barbour

Liza Barbour is a public health dietitian who has worked in remote WA, Alice Springs, the Kingdom of Tonga and most recently here in Victoria. Liza worked at SecondBite as the National Nutrition Programs Manager and now teaches food sustainability systems and public health nutrition at Monash University. Last year Liza led the development of Dietitians Australia's first position statement on healthy and sustainable diets. Liza recently submitted her PhD which explored the role of local government policy in facilitating the uptake of healthy and sustainable diet-related practices. Outside of her Monash role, Liza and her husband James co-founded their family business Dillicious, producing and distributing american style dill pickles throughout Australia.

Berbel Franse

Berbel Franse is passionate advocate for a fairer, more resilient and sustainable food system. Equipped with a background in Supply Chain Management and Masters in Sustainability Science, Berbel works actively towards this as Program Manager (Food Security & Food Sustainability) with Healthy Cities Illawarra, coordinator of Food Fairness Illawarra, founder of Hidden Harvest and driver behind the Wollongong Online Farmers Market.

Savannah Supski - Just Food Collective

Savannah is founding member and treasurer of the Just Food Collective. She is in the final year of her Bachelor of Food Studies at William Angliss Institute. She is currently a research fellow at Deakin University looking at emergency food relief in Victoria. Savannah is leading the Fed Up! student food insecurity research project at William Angliss. Her passions lie in food justice, workers’ rights and food policy. In her lifetime she hopes to see a society guided by principles of equality and love, rather than the greed-driven system we currently live in.

The Just Food Collective is a not-for-profit founded in 2021 by the Bachelor of Food Studies students at William Angliss Institute in Melbourne. They were keen to put their learnt knowledge into collective action. As part of the larger Food Justice movement, their philosophy is centred around targeting youth and future leaders for fresh perspectives in the battle for a more equitable, just, and sustainable food system.

Since organising in 2021, they have built a strong foundation through six principles: sustainability, wellbeing, systemic approach, collective action, conviviality and youth leadership. These six principles show what JFC is all about. They believe the food system needs to be transformed into one that is sustainable for the whole planet, forever, and that it must promote wellbeing for all, rather than the privileged few.

Just Food believes that we are more powerful together, especially when we get to sit around the table together with good food.
