Urban Planning is a hot topic everywhere, particularly  regional areas like the Illawarra Shoalhaven where estimated population growth over the next 20 years will have major impacts.

To coincide with our current exhibition, Henry Halloran and the Great Australian Dream we invite you to hear three specialists in the field of urban planning talk about:

Sustainability, Environment and 21st Century Urban Planning

The role of urban planners is to create healthy, liveable cities, including how we live, work and play. These concepts were at the heart of Henry Halloran’s practice in the 20th Century, and are still relevant today, with the added impacts of environment and sustainability.

This is an opportunity to hear what these three speakers have to say about urban planning in the 21st century:

• Professor Rob Freestone, School of the Built Environment, UNSW will provide the background to Henry Halloran’ practice, considered a visionary in his time, and the context between the 20th and 21st C Urban Planning. Professor Freestone’s expertise is Urban planning, history and theory.

• Rasmus Frisk, CEO arki_lab, Rasmus is currently working with Shoalhaven City Council on the Riverfront Project has extensive international experience working on large-scale masterplans, building design and public space projects, collaborating with a wide range of clients including small not-for-profit groups. arki_lab is an interdisciplinary urban design studio combining the expertise of ethnologists, sociologists, architects, landscape architects and urban planners with experience securing the consistency and translation of knowledge from process to the final physical design. They have offices in Denmark and Sydney.

• Professor Roberta Ryan Executive Director, Institute for Regional Futures and the University of Newcastle's inaugural Professor of Local and Regional Governance. She has worked in leading private and public enterprises and as an advisor to all spheres of government, nationally and internationally, to help them meet the challenges and realise the opportunities in economic, social and spatial planning and development.

The session will be divided into two parts, with light lunch followed by a panel session with questions.
