    Bike maintenance

    Love to ride but not sure what to do if something goes wrong with your bike, and want to be more independent when out riding? You will take your tyre off and put it back on again (replicating fix on a flat tyre) and discuss responses to key things that could go wrong. 9.30 to 10.30am In marquee outside Eco Centre. Session for all ages, hosted by South Canterbury Mountain Bike Club. Bring your bike along to learn from local riders’ experience. $5 each

(Rushtonarchitects.co.nz ) 9.30 to 10.30am Inside the Eco Centre. with Timaru architect John Rushton. $10 (John’s team designed this Eco Centre as a re-purposing of a timber club house; also designed extension of Arowhenua Marae)

    Solar electric power generation, on roofs and in paddocks, supported by affordable storage batteries. Bio-methane from ‘digestors’ of farm and parkland wastes, as used in the UK to power tractors. Hear how these technologies are developing here and their role in Electrifying NZ. 10.45am – 11.45am Inside the Eco Centre. Panel including Geraldine-based engineer Stephen Drew, Peter Bennett from Alpine Energy, and John Wilson from Sunshine Solar. $10

    Get creative making a game to take home. Upcycle your own cup & ball catching game. Fly a butterfly or a bee into a flower. Use your imagination to make the game colourful and unique to you. 1.30 (assemble at Eco Centre outdoor classroom space) return 3pm. Rhys Taylor & Acacia Voorkamp Guided 1.5 hour excursion. Children to bring a responsible adult, as we are near water. Consider: Strong shoes, raincoat, phone, hat and drinking water? $5 per person on the day (adult or child.) 12 noon to 1pm In the marquee. Recyclable materials provided, for a fun craft project with Krisztina Szuhai. $5 per child. Adults welcome free if accompanying children.

Learn about energy and nutrient cycles in the soil, from our visiting Lincoln-based expert. 12 noon to 1.15pm in the Eco Centre. Charles ‘Merf’ Merfield, agro-ecologist is our VIP Festival guest., focused on the ways of the future . Advance booking recommended. $20

    A session on changing lifestyles, to live more lightly on the planet and confidently understand what actions make a real difference to your household ‘carbon footprint’: when indoors, gardening, travelling, shopping, etc. 4pm—5pm inside Eco Centre . Rhys Taylor is Timaru District Councils’ Climate Change Advisor (and a voluntary trustee of the Eco Centre). Fee includes a printed copy of the 2024 personal climate action guide, also available online in an interactive version. $10.
