Green Drinks Topic: Sustainable Building Design

Our first speaker is Tavis Creswell-Wells, director of consultancy Ecolution SBS (sustainable building solutions).

Bringing over 10 years of NZ and international experience Tavis’s practice focuses on finding practical, cost-effective solutions to improve building ‘performance’ in terms of energy efficiency, comfort, health and environmental impact of buildings.

Tavis will provide an overview of what ‘sustainability’ really means in the context of buildings, NZ’s poor building standards, and key design considerations. He’ll provide a brief insight into the ‘interstitial condensation’ problem in retrofits/conversions. The presentation will conclude on the issue of sustainability regulation, opening to questions on what people want to see more focus on.

Next up we have Simone Bub, from Bub Architects, who will share the story of a recently completed home in Gisborne. With a focus on sustainable building design, Simone will explore how thoughtful architectural decisions can create homes that are comfortable, healthy, energy efficient and better for the environment — using the project as a real-world example of putting these ideas into practice.

We will finish with a brainstorm about what policy changes you'd like to see to make sustainable design more mainstream and accessible.
