Event description

About UNSW Language Exchange Program

Whether you are interested in making friends that speak a language you want to practice, want to gain insights into cultural codes that are hard to learn from textbooks, or prepare for a trip overseas, this program is for you.

The UNSW Language Exchange Program allows UNSW students in Australia to exchange language and cultural insights in a relaxed environment. Participants are matched with up to three students that speak their language of choice for reciprocal learning. Groups meet and exchange language skills weekly for a minimum of 90 mins and also get the opportunity to interact with other program participants at program-wide events.

The program is FREE and for Term 3 is open to Study Abroad & Exchange students, Cultural Mentors and Mentees, as well as students studying languages in ADA faculty only for T3 2022. You can be a complete beginner in the language you wish to learn or an advanced speaker!

  • Gain conversational experience and confidence in communicating in another language
  • Increase their competitiveness and employability in Australia and abroad
  • Improve or maintain their language skills
  • Meet friends from Australia and all corners of the world
  • Prepare for a trip, study, or employment abroad
  • Take what they're learning in class a step further

From application to conversation

1. Apply

Applications are now open! https://forms.office.com/Pages...

Register via https://forms.office.com/Pages... now! Our matching software matches applicants on a first come first served basis and you will be notified via email once you've been matched. Tips! For high-demand languages like English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean, we may not have enough native speakers to meet the demand so applying early and listing several language preferences will increase your chance to get a match.

2. Meet and talk

Participants will be invited to the Language Exchange Launch on Tuesday 20 September 2022, where they will get the opportunity to meet their team and other language exchange program participants. You will also receive advice about how to share a language and get the most out of the experience! While participating in the program, groups are expected to meet weekly during the term (a minimum of 7.5 hours in total), except during exam periods and term breaks.

3. Completion of program

All participants that meet the program requirements will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program. Students can choose to continue the exchange connection even after the program concludes.
