The Anticlinal Fold is a modern Jazz ensemble whose focus is on performing their own original compositions in a swinging and progressive style. This Castlemaine-based jazz quartet first formed in 2019 for a series of weekly ‘Jazz on the Verandah’ fundraisers. Following on from sell out performances at the Castlemaine Jazz Festival this WInter, The Anticlinal Fold returns to the Northern for another collaboration with vocalist, Jo Huf.
Jo Huf’s beautiful voice and deep understanding of the bossa nova style has garnered a considerable following in the Goldfields region, performing to a packed house in late 2023 at the Northern Arts with an Antônio Carlos Jobim Tribute show. Jo is also a Triple J’s Unearthed featured artist.
The Anticlinal Fold was founded by composer and pianist Jem Challender. Jem’s a past winner of the Australian Songwriters Competition and he studied improvisation and piano at the AIM under the legendary guitarist, George Golla and pianist Dave McRae. After many years play in Europe, Jem returned to Castlemaine six years ago with a determination to collaborate with local musicians.
Bendigo-based double bassist, Ben Gibbons is a former side man for folk band the Waifs and is widely regarded as the finest double bassist in the region. In early 2023, Jem Challender and Ben Gibbons released this EP together. Completing the rhythm section will be drummer Arron Light (Huskee, and Ainslie Wills) who is an outstanding local kit and hand percussionist.
The Anticlinal Fold has become a strong and distinctive voice in the local music scene of the Central Goldfields. We hope you can make it to this next adventure in improvisation.
