Description

Celebrate Takatu LandCare’s successes and hear local legends talk environmental wins and challenges

Matu Booth, conservation manager at The Forest Bridge Trust (TFBT) will tell us about the remarkable journeys of Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary kiwi; from behind the predator fence and across the peninsula throughout the last six years.

Between May and June 2026, TFBT deployed 19 acoustic recorders across the Tāwharanui buffer zone. Kiwi calls were recorded at 14 of the monitoring sites, confirming the birds are now well established throughout much of the buffer zone.

“Even more encouraging, kiwi duets, where a male and female call to one another, were detected at nine sites, indicating established breeding pairs.”

Steve Hathaway from Young Ocean Explorers will show us how what we do on the land affects everything about the health of our oceans.

Young Ocean Explorers developed a programme, the 21 Day Challenge, which has now been used by more than 4500 classes in the last five years. In 2027, the programme is evolving into Ocean Aotearoa – to grow into New Zealand’s National Ocean Learning Programme for years 1-8, reaching every child in Aotearoa.

“We want to change the way we view and treat the ocean, because our nation’s greatest story is still waiting to be told.”
