Event description

Come and join a passionate community and immerse yourself in majestic temperate forests, buttongrass plains & rivers while recording the biological diversity of these threatened ecosystems.

This data helps highlight the global significance of this profoundly beautiful area and assists our campaign to have Takayna protected as a World Heritage listed National Park.

What is a BioBlitz?

We are heading back into Takayna for our tenth annual BioBlitz.

takayna BioBlitz is a festival of science in nature, held in one of the world’s last truly wild places. This event brings together scientists, experts, naturalists and members of the public for a weekend of environmental scientific discovery.

The main goals of BioBlitz 2024 are to survey the biological diversity of the threatened ecosystems of takayna to assist in our campaign to have takayna protected as a World Heritage listed National Park.

This year we will conduct field surveys in the southeast of Takayna, sites covering a variety of ecosystems including the button grass moorlands, alpine grasslands, eucalyptus forests, rainforests and rivers.

Our central base camp in Waratah will provide facilities to share discoveries, identify and collate specimens, database entry and a chance to listen to the survey leaders discuss their field of expertise.

Science is a central component of the Bob Brown Foundation campaign for long-lasting and secure protection of takayna, including improving our understanding of the biodiversity of the region.

Where is BioBlitz 2024?

BioBlitz headquarters will be at the Waratah Men’s Shed in Waratah Tasmania.

At the headquarters, we will be hosting breakfast and dinners while lunch packs will be sent out with you into the field and there will be evening talks. A data analysis area will be set up for you to engage with the survey leaders and other participants.

Each day we will travel to our survey sites using minibuses and car-pooling. Some sites have been picked to be inclusive of accessibility, however, all sites require a level of mobility.
