Event description

Join us in Port Kembla on 14 March for a community screening of ‘Takayna  — the Heart of Lutruwita’ as part of our Summer for Takayna program.

Through the power of personal stories, be taken on a journey to the vast and threatened landscapes of Australia’s largest temperate rainforest in the northwest of Lutruwita / Tasmania. This area, known as Takayna / Tarkine, is one of the last wild places on Earth.

‘Takayna — the Heart of Lutruwita’ is an inspiring and hopeful film about the battle to defend Takayna from mining and logging. From frontline activists to Tasmanian Aboriginal community members, scientists and musicians, these people are standing up for its protection, and you can join them too.

You will also get to watch and experience three local short movies:

Mourning Country - Andrew Kaineder / Stitch Films
After the loss of his home and Aboriginal culture centre in the catastrophic 2020 Australian bushfires, Budawang elder Noel Butler mourns not for the structures that once stood, but for the flora and fauna we share this land with.

Wallflowers & Evergreen - Tad Soudan / Kirli Saunders
Wallflowers and Evergreens is a poem by award-winning Gundungurra born Gunai Writer Kirli Saunders. Drawing on her lived experience of mental health and the connection, grounding, and healing she finds with Mother Earth. Amplifying the wisdom of the land, and the power of Old Ways for connection and wellbeing, Kirli’s poem is brought to life in this powerful collaboration with Tad Souden, a celebrated filmmaker and advocate for mental health awareness. Honouring journeys across Yuin, Gundungurra, and Dharawal lands, this short film focuses on caring for people and places. It explores relationships and reciprocity, depicting the connections forged with spirits, sand, soil, waterways, and sky. Centring presence, this film draws us into spaces where vulnerability is encouraged and meditative time is ‘measured by acacia blooming, echidna trains, winds that change, moon who wanes.’

Cultural Burning for Resilience - Jamie Lepre / Mane Collective

The screening is hosted by local BBF supporter, Andrew Kaineder.

Doors open at 6pm - Film starts at 8pm.
