WEBINAR - Taking care of our rivers in the face of climate change
Description
Faced with the extreme conditions we experienced this winter, which are likely to recur, we have two options for adaptation: build dikes and rebuild as before, or truly understand how nature works, particularly our rivers, and adapt accordingly.
Environmental scientist and resource management expert Tom Kay will present evidence about how environmental management has exacerbated the risks of flooding and disasters and the impact of flood protection structures on our rivers and communities. Kay will propose solutions for managing land around rivers as our warming climate increases flood risk.
Making space for rivers, allowing them to reclaim parts of their natural floodplains in strategic locations, is a natural solution to climate change that will protect communities from devastating floods while restoring the environment and improving local recreational opportunities.
