A farewell/fundraiser recital before I leave Aotearoa to work at Wells Cathedral as the Tenor Choral Scholar.
Focused around NZ composer Janet Jennings' song cycle Taking Off, based on the poetry collection of the same title by NZ poet Brian Turner. The work explores many facets of life in Aotearoa, with striking, emotive, and humourous depictions of nature, culture, and relationships.
Pianist Kathryn Mosley will accompany me for this, as well as Maurice Ravel's beautiful and inventive Trois Chansons song cycle, and select works from my NZSM third-year recital repertoire.
A chamber orchestra will then join me for J.S. Bach's cantata Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht, BWV 55. Bach's only cantata for solo tenor, flowing and heart-wrenching harmonies follow the laments of a man who has acted against God and asks for merciful judgement.
Please join me for a dramatic evening celebrating Aotearoa's music and musicians!
