•ABOUT THE ARTISTS

TALIB KWELI

The Brooklyn-based MC earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years.

“I’m a touring artist. I’m an artist that’s internationally known. I’m not just a local artist at this point in my career. I’m cognizant of the fact that what I do is beyond where it started. I’m trying to reach the apex of where I am now, but without turning my back on or dismissing what I’ve done before.”

After nearly 20 years of releasing mesmerizing music, Talib Kweli stands as one of the world’s most talented and most accomplished Hip Hop artists. Whether working with Mos Def as one-half of Black Star, partnering with producer Hi-Tek for Reflection Eternal, releasing landmark solo material or collaborating with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Just Blaze, J Dilla, or Madlib, Kweli commands attention by delivering top-tier lyricism, crafting captivating stories and showing the ability to rhyme over virtually any type of instrumental.

In 2011, Kweli founded Javotti Media, which is self-defined as “a platform for independent thinkers and doers.” Kweli has set out to make Javotti Media (which released his 2011 album, Gutter Rainbows, and is named after his paternal grandmother) into a media powerhouse that releases music, films and books.

DJ ABILITIES

"I’ve been djing and producing for 20+ years and have had the opportunity to work with many wonderful artists, El-P, The Pharcyde, Atmosphere, Travie McCoy to name a few, but what I’m most know for is my work with the late great Eyedea. Together we created three albums and toured many times, for any of you who got to see us you know how impactful our live shows could be!
In the years following his passing I developed my solo DJ show. After massive amounts of trail and error and learning I landed on a style that is open format, scratch heavy, full of original remixes and mash ups + paired with a VJ set I curated and edited myself.
I also took on the challenge of writing my first solo album “Phonograph Phoenix” It was my first time fully creating beats from the ground up, no samples etc, it was a difficult, but rewarding process. I chose to have no guest appearances to further push myself. I’m currently working on the my sophomore that is the same approach.
Lastly and most recently I started a new project. I’d consider it somewhere between Tech House and Bass House. I’ve been working on it for the past several years and am happy to say I will be releasing soon!
Thank you to all of you who have stayed with me on this journey and for those of you just joining, welcome, I hope you all love what’s to come!" - Dj Abilities

CHICHARONES

Chicharones continue to refine their own unique sounds adding live instrumentation and multi-part harmonies into their recordings and live show that has launched them far beyond their status as indie-rap darlings. Working withprofessional hook writers from Atlantic Records, the Chicharones have built an adult sound with contemporary influences that make their sound similar to that of B.O.B., Gnarls Barkley and N.E.R.D. Their most recent release and stage show is designed to grab the listener with familiar sounds, banging drums, layered harmonies and the lyrical back and forth that makes Chicharones such an exciting group!

ZEEK THE RAPPER

Zeek The Rapper is a young, up and coming artist from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He’s been making music for nearly the last 10 years and has shared the stage with artists such as Famous Dex, B.o.b, Sage Francis, Devin the dude, Slug of Atmosphere, Dax, and many others. He has a unique new school delivery that’s still founded in the true heart of conscious hip-hop. In many of his songs, he writes about a life in the streets, dealing with doubt, and following your dreams. While rapping about being the best version of himself, he inspires his audience to do the same thing, and puts a positive spin on today’s hip-hop music.

⫷ABOUT URBAN CONNECTION⫸
The original URBAN CONNECTION was an event series from Direct Productions (our founder Ron Enright's OG production co.) back in the 90's. It was a hip-hop focused series that integrated all of hip-hop's core elements. Stacked with breakdancing, MCs, DJs, and graffiti artists. The event hosted artists such as Living Legends, Blackalicious (RIP), Latryx, Hieroglyphics and many more! As time goes on the music has evolved, we are bringing the series back - this time infusing some electronic styles into the mix. There's a lot of overlap - many electronic genres have hip-hop inspiration and/or samples in them - especially in the bass & dnb realms! We're still keepin it real and staying true to our hip-hop roots - URBAN CONNECTION will always have hip-hop at it's core - we're excited to show you the new TFP spin we're putting on this event in 2023! Preserving the culture, but with a modern twist.
