To celebrate Christina Ellen Stead’s (1902–1983) birthday month, learn about the acclaimed author’s life, particularly her childhood at Lydham Hall with her father, the influential naturalist David George Stead, stepmother Ada Gibbins, and 5 siblings.
Born in Rockdale, Christina published novels beginning with The Salzburg Tales and Seven Poor Men of Sydney (1934). Her most well-known novel The Man Who Loved Children (1940) was based on her childhood in Sydney.
The annual Christina Stead Prize for Fiction is awarded as part of the NSW Literary Awards.

One of the oldest homes in the St George area, New South Wales State Heritage-listed, Lydham Hall is a sandstone villa built in the late 1870s for businessman Joseph Davis, his wife Ellen and their family. The interior of Lydham Hall is presented in the style of a late Victorian residence, with a fine collection of antique furniture and over 1,500 objects of local and historical interest.
The museum is located at 18 Lydham Avenue, Rockdale NSW 2216. On-street parking is available or a short bus trip from Rockdale Station takes you within a 5-minute walk of the museum.
