Event description

We are possibly the first generation to watch the collapse of an empire live-streamed into our homes and phones. So, it is perhaps unsurprising that we appear to have no idea how to reconcile the reality of this historic moment with international norms and theory, let alone relationships.

How are we to understand and relate to our long-term ally when many former US intelligence and national security officials argue the US is “on a trajectory” toward authoritarian rule?

With the Labor government arguing it is all full-steam ahead, is it time to ask what happens, After America? Please join Dr Emma Shortis in Talking Authors, hosted by Dr Julie Macken.

Dr Emma Shortis is Director of the Australia Institute’s International & Security Affairs Program, an Adjunct Senior Fellow at RMIT and author of After America: Australia and the New World Order (Vantage Point, 2025).

Emma draws on her long-standing research on America's place in the world, her discussions with some of Australia's most prominent policy-makers and commentators and her experience in America in the final days of the election campaign, to develop a picture of how the world is changing with a second Trump presidency and what choices Australia has in determining its own future.
