Community Planting Day - Tamahunga Stream & Wetland (Whangateau Harbour)

Join us for a community planting day to help restore stream and wetland habitat and care for Whangateau Harbour. Help us get 5,600 plants to get in the ground - many hands makes light work!
Please carpool as parking is limited - thanks!
This special site includes a coastal kauri grove, waterway and wetland areas visited by the endangered matuku-hūrepo / Australasian bittern.
The planting is part of a wider restoration effort coordinated through the Whangateau Catchment Collective, showing what’s possible when landowners, Auckland Council, restoration partners, and local businesses work together for the catchment and harbour.
No experience is needed - just bring sturdy footwear (it will be wet underfoot), weather-appropriate clothing, and gloves if you have them.
We’ll have a BBQ lunch as a thank you for everyone’s mahi.

FAQs
- What should I bring?
Please bring sturdy closed-toe footwear or gumboots, weather-appropriate clothing, a water bottle, sunscreen, and a spade & gloves if you have them.
- Will tools be provided?
Some spades will be available, but please bring yours along if you have one.
- Is food provided?
Yep, do the mahi, get the treats - free BBQ lunch for everyone! There'll also be tea, coffee and baking.
- Can children come?
Yes, families are welcome. Children will need to be supervised by an adult, as this is a working property/restoration site with uneven ground and wetland/stream areas.
- Can I come for part of the event?
Yes. Staying for the full session is great, but you’re welcome to come for the time you can manage.
- Where do I park?
We will be using the field entrance to the site (1037b Leigh Rd) where there will be parking available. Please look out for the signs directing you. Please carpool if you can,
- What happens if it rains?
Planting usually goes ahead in light rain, so please dress for the weather. If conditions are unsafe or the event needs to be postponed, registered attendees will be notified.
- Why is this site important?
The planting will help restore stream and wetland habitat, improve water quality, support native wildlife, and contribute to the wider health of Whangateau Harbour. The site is especially exciting because matuku-hūrepo / Australasian bittern has been spotted on the property.
- Who is organising the event?
This planting day is being coordinated through the Whangateau Catchment Collective, in partnership with:

Auckland Council - including local Park Ranger Dan Marrow, supported by Council’s restoration contractors Wildlands and Terra Purra.
