What happens to grief when home is thousands of kilometres away?

Join us for a special Día de Muertos edition of Tamales y Terapia, a culturally grounded community gathering bringing together tamal-making, storytelling, somatic therapy, and sacred remembrance.

For many of us who have migrated, grief takes many forms. We grieve people we love, but we can also grieve countries, communities, versions of ourselves, traditions we cannot always practise in the same way, and the experience of witnessing difficult events affecting the places and people we love from thousands of kilometres away.

And yet, our cultures have always carried ways of remembering, gathering and healing.

Día de Muertos reminds us that connection does not disappear because of distance, migration or death.

Tamales y Terapia brings that spirit of remembrance into an embodied community experience centred around something deeply familiar to many of us: the kitchen table.

Together, we will make tamales while exploring stories of migration, grief (duelo), identity, intergenerational experiences, belonging, joy and the people who came before us.

Facilitated by Nancy Diaz and Andrea Teran, the evening will weave storytelling and ancestral cooking with gentle somatic practices and elements informed by Brainspotting, a body-based therapeutic approach that recognises that our experiences can live not only in the stories we tell, but also in the ways our bodies hold and process them.

Rather than asking you simply to talk about grief, migration or belonging, this gathering invites us to slow down and notice what happens when we create, remember, cook and connect together.

There is no expectation to disclose anything you do not want to share.

You can participate in the conversation, listen, make a tamal, remember someone you love, reconnect with a tradition, or simply sit at the table with community.

Tamales y Terapia is a space for duelo, but also for joy.

Because our ancestral traditions remind us that remembrance can contain both.

Presented through a collaboration between Global Citizen Therapy, Mexican HomeFood and Casa Terremoto at the new Centro Cultural Latino, this pilot gathering is an invitation to help us imagine what culturally grounded, community-based mental health and healing spaces could look like for Latin American communities, diaspora, and allies to the Latine community in Sydney.

This first gathering is also an invitation to help shape what Tamales y Terapia can become: a culturally grounded space for connection, healing and community in Sydney.

To make our first gathering accessible to community, tickets are offered at a special introductory price of $30, for an experience valued at $150.

Este miércoles 28 de octubre, te invitamos a reunirnos alrededor de la mesa para celebrar Día de Muertos haciendo tamales, compartiendo historias y recordando con cariño a quienes vinieron antes que nosotros.

Tamales y Terapia nace de esas cocinas donde no solo aprendimos recetas, sino también historias familiares, tradiciones, risas y maneras de mantenernos conectadxs con nuestras raíces.

En esta edición especial hablaremos sobre duelo, memoria, migración, cultura y pertenencia, dejando también espacio para la alegría y para recordar a nuestros seres queridos desde la vida que compartimos con ellos.

No necesitas saber hacer tamales ni tienes que compartir nada que no quieras. Puedes venir a cocinar, escuchar, recordar y conectar con comunidad.
