Price $10 – $24 NZD + BF Get tickets

Event description

This is a community collaboration with I Love Avondale

Come and join Jasmine Tuia as we stitch together, learn the basic vocabulary of Samoan siapo and learn about the importance of fa’a’ali’ao (trochus shell), fa’a’aveau (starfish), and fa’a masina (rolled pandanus leaves).

Using these foundations, you will be invited to create designs representing your identity to stitch and embroider onto Tapa.

More about the Artist

Jasmine Tuiā (b. 1997), Apia Sāmoa is a tapa maker (paper mulberry, bark cloth) who uses embroidery and stitching to think about Moana cultural memory. From the villages of Matautu Lefaga, Falefa Anoama’a and Malifa Sāmoa, Jasmine explores her familial connections to these places through Sāmoan techniques of storytelling and siapo. Her curatorial and community facilitation passions involve collective talanoa (conversations) and community collaborations.
