Tasmania’s Debt Dilemma with Saul Eslake

In his recent talk, leading economist Saul Eslake issued a frank warning about Tasmania’s financial future, saying that without serious reform, the State’s Budget would continue on an unsustainable path. Now, with the Tasmanian Government’s official response to his Independent Review of Tasmania’s Public Sector Finances, Saul returns to unpack their approach.

While the Treasurer has acknowledged his work, the Government has dismissed every recommendation, including proposals for greater transparency and improved fiscal strategy governance. According to Saul, this refusal to engage with tough but necessary choices means Tasmania’s financial outlook is getting worse.

Based in Hobart, Saul operates Corinna Economic Advisory, where he provides expert analysis and consultancy to a diverse array of clients, including governments, investors, and major corporations.

Saul’s career spans over four decades, including significant roles as Chief Economist at both ANZ Bank and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He has shaped public discourse through keynote addresses, media appearances, and his involvement in key government advisory panels. Saul has also been a member of various influential boards, including Hydro Tasmania and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute.

Saul holds a first-class honours degree in Economics, a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa), and several advanced qualifications in finance and leadership and is a valued advisor to the Australian Parliamentary Budget Office.
