About Old Westminster:
Our story begins in the summer of 2000, when our family moved to a small farm in the rolling hills of Westminster, Maryland. It was once a retired juniper nursery that felt like a boundless adventure to us as kids.
Our mom was a true ’90s homesteader — homeschooling three young children, growing food, and turning every challenge into a DIY project. With the help of our dad, a skilled carpenter, most projects turned out successfully. Together, they taught us the values of hard work, hospitality, and stewardship.
In 2008, when the financial crisis halted our parent’s carpentry business, a new save-the-farm idea took root: What if we planted a vineyard? At the time, we were in college studying marketing, chemistry, and business. One “I’m in if you are” conversation later, we were all committed and Old Westminster Winery was born.
In 2011, with a small loan from our grandfather, we planted 10,000 grapevines by hand. Drew led the vineyard, Lisa mastered winemaking, and Ashli built experiences and shared our journey online.
We bottled our first wines in 2013, opened our tasting room in 2015, and expanded with Burnt Hill Farm in 2016. We introduced wood-fired pizza, private greenhouse dining, and Maryland’s first licensed outdoor kitchen in 2020 following the pandemic.
In 2022, Drew was diagnosed with leukemia. He endured years of treatment, surviving with bone marrow transplants from both sisters. In 2024, he celebrated one year in complete remission. That same year, we were nationally recognized as "the young pioneers of American wine" by VinePair and officially purchased the winery from our parents.
In 2025, we welcomed Chef Tae Strain as Culinary Director at Old Westminster Winery and Chef-Partner of the forthcoming Burnt Hill project.
Our mission is simple: to bring people true moments of joy through wine and food, and to celebrate life together.
About Chef Tae Strain: a Maryland native and 16-year veteran of the culinary world, joined Old Westminster as Culinary Director and chef-partner of the forthcoming Burnt Hill project. Chef Tae has led Michelin-starred kitchens — including The Progress in San Francisco, Momofuku in Washington, D.C., and PUBLIC in New York City. As a Korean-American adoptee, Tae continually explores identity, time, and place through food.
