Te Reo Māori Panel

Event description

Join us for this special event during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week.

We will start with a historical overview, looking at what has impacted the Māori language over the last 200 years - both in terms of its loss and its revitalisation. Then we will hear the stories of our 3 Māori panelists who will put a name and a face on that history and show how it has impacted their lives.

Panelists will touch on the sensitive subjects of identity, culture and loss. One panelist grew up only speaking Māori, others have more painful stories of language loss in their whānau, and can share their frustrations and feelings as they try to learn te reo Māori as adults.

This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the place of te reo Māori in our nation's past, and its importance today in the lives of Māori in our community. We welcome teenagers and adults from all cultures to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Te Reo Māori teacher and learner Kate White (Pākehā) will present this historical overview and facilitate the panel discussion.

This is a free event, but places are limited so please register by getting your free tickets today.

Organised by the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury
